ABOUT US

After the War my father, Ted, became a picture auctioneer at Bonhams where he established the first picture sale. Several years later he left to become a dealer (and restorer) based at our home in Cambridge.  As a boy, I remember this as an extraordinary period with van loads of pictures arriving from sales, and other dealers, collectors and buyers constantly coming and going.

In 1976 we moved to the west country and I took over the business in 1981 as a full-time restorer specialising in the conservation and dealing of paintings.

My skills as a restorer and my knowledge of paintings were formed while working for Sotheby's and Bearnes. Over the years our firm has attracted other highly skilled craftsmen to our team as we continue to develop a multi-talented conservation studio.

Thirty-five years on my son, Ben, joined us. He had already gained the skills in canvas conservation but is now equally interested in the paintings themselves.

Early British Art has always been a particular passion, with our insight being expanded from the countless paintings we have restored for collectors, country houses and museums.  Most recently we assisted in the management of an important group of Kneller's, one of which was featured in the British Baroque exhibition at the Tate.

Additionally, we have always advised on the best means to buy and sell. The below images represent a cross-section of these sales over the years.
